Sunday, September 6, 2020, 11:00am - 11:30am

FREE Virtual Event

Join us to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month at Virtual Family First Sunday on September 6! We will have a special guest, Illustrator Alyssa Bermudez, who will read her book Lucía the Luchadora and talk about what it’s like to be an illustrator! Then we’ll create our own luchador and luchadora masks inspired by Lucía!

No need to register - just check VIRTUAL UCR ARTS on September 6 at 11am PST!

About Lucía the Luchadora:
Lucía the Luchadora named one of the Best Books of 2017 by NPRKirkus ReviewsChicago Public Library and more! Lucía zips through the playground in her cape just like the boys, but when they tell her “girls can’t be superheroes,” suddenly she doesn’t feel so mighty. That’s when her beloved abuela reveals a dazzling secret: Lucía comes from a family of luchadoras, the bold and valiant women of the Mexican lucha libre tradition. Cloaked in a flashy new disguise, Lucía returns as a recess sensation! But when she’s confronted with a case of injustice, Lucía must decide if she can stay true to the ways of the luchadora and fight for what is right, even if it means breaking the sacred rule of never revealing the identity behind her mask. A story about courage and cultural legacy, Lucía the Luchadora is full of pluck, daring, and heart.
Praise for Lucía:
NPR Best Books of 2017
Kirkus Best Books of 2017
Chicago Public Library Best Picture Books of 2017
Evanston Public Library List of 101 Best Books for Kids 2017
ALA’s 2018 Amelia Bloomer List for best feminist books for children
