Review: 'Sight Unseen' at UCR/California Museum of Photography
Los Angeles Times
At UC Riverside's California Museum of Photography, guest curator Douglas McCulloh has assembled 87 works by 11 artists and one collective. (New York's Seeing With Photography Collective has had a shifting membership since its founding in 1988; the current roster numbers 27.) Although the show includes artists from France (Evgen Bavcar and Annie Hesse), Scotland (Rosita McKenzie) and Mexico (Gerardo Nigenda), the selection suggests this is mostly an American phenomenon.

Pageant of Masters theme takes hip-hop turn
By Vanessa Franko
Every year, the Pageant of the Masters attracts crowds in Laguna Beach as people perform in living tableaux of works of art. Now, that idea is getting a beat behind it as UC Riverside's Sweeney Art Gallery hosts "Uncovered: A Pageant of Hip Hop Masters," which will bring hip-hop album covers to life. The exhibition will happen in July and auditions are being held Monday and Tuesday for dancers, actors who can pose and even a DJ.

Hip-hop pageant holds auditions
By Vanessa Franko
Joe Bird, of Riverside, paced in front of a blank wall at the UC-Riverside Sweeney Art Gallery on Monday afternoon, stopping every so often to strike and hold a pose with crossed arms, like a hip-hop star from 1988. It was part of his audition for "Uncovered: A Pageant of Hip Hop Masters," which comes to the gallery July 30-Aug. 1 and Aug. 6-8. The project is a play on "The Pageant of the Masters" in Laguna Beach, where famous tableaux come to life.
